Thanks to an initiative led by several international volunteers and headed by our friend from America, Elizabeth Mitchel, KIHO will implement the construction of at least three biogas plants in Mkume sub-village in the Pare mountains. Eventually, ten biogas plants shall be constructed in an effort that local communities benefit from this rather simple technology. In fact, the small-holder farmers just need to use the cow-dung manure, mix it with water, and then the locally-made biogas plant is producing biogas for them.
A woman cooking with biogas The construction of 10 biogas plants in the area will reduce deforestation caused by the need for firewood, relieve women and children from the tiresome and long work of collecting firewood, and the time spent on cooking. This will allow particularly women to involve themselves in other economic activities, thus improving their families' situations and allowing children to attend school. Also, biogas emits no smoke, and is very clean thereby limiting the family members being affected by the smoke for their respiratory systems and eyes or getting ill in their abdominal systems.
If we can get enough donations for the materials necessary, we can begin this project already in July 2013, liberating women and children from the drudgery of collecting firewood, and protecting the forests of the Pare mountains. The cost of the materials needed for each biogas plant is approximately TSH 1.1 million ($700 or €560). The overall external financial resources of the project are about TSH 8.5 million ($5,300 or $4,200). It is important to stress that the local communities themselves will contribute with 55% as they will provide their labor without charge and are able to collect many materials for free.
