On Wednesday, 23 and Thursday, July 24th 2014; the Kilimanjaro Hope Organization had a pleasure to be able to supply 7 manual pumps to farmers of Minyala village. On Wednesday 23rd, the three development initiative groups namely, Miu Mwera Group, Mwamko Group and Kilimo Hai Group, each received a complete set of the Money Maker Pump.

Also on 24th, the members of HATUUMI and TUMI Groups each received a complete set of Money Maker Pump. The Money Maker pumping system is a new technology to be applied by farmers for the first time in at Minyala village.
This technology and machines will help in facilitating and make easier the work of irrigating the farms and vegetable gardens, instead of the old system of farmers carrying water by use of buckets from the wells to water their plants and seedlings throughout the agricultural season.

Minyala is ne of the villages in Vumari Ward, in Same district; one of the semi arid zones in Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania. The village comprises of approximately 1600 people (1606 inhabitants and a total of 315 households).

Geographically, this village is crossed by a seasonal river which appears like a basin accumulating waters from either-side Mountains, surrounding the village and supplying present subterranean (bottomless) water. Indeed, fetching water daily is one the most common women’s activities in Maasai tribes, along with building houses and collecting firewood. Sometimes donkeys are used to transport water. One donkey can carry around 60 liters but, as its pace is slower than humans, it may take up to one day to go to the river and come back (around 5-6 hours one-way).

However, most of the time, women first waste hours looking for donkeys as, due to water and grass shortage, they run away. Sometimes women pick the first donkeys they find on their route, that may not belong to them, thus causing tensions between families claiming for their own donkeys. On average, 3 donkeys can carry 180 liters, which must be sufficient for 1 day for more than 40 people within one boma. The total direct beneficiary house holds of the project are 970 from all the six villages that are located in Same District of Kilimanjaro Region in Tanzania. These households will get directly involved in all the planned activities and eventually receive food in return as a motivation having completed the assigned pieces of work. Therefore, a total of direct food beneficiaries is estimated to be 18,169 people. The projects will be implemented within a period of eight months from August 2013 to March 2014.

Overall, KIHO will distribute a total of 203.5 metric tons of food, including 166.87 mts of maize, 12.21 mts of vegetable oil and 24.42 mts of pulses provided by WFP aiming at benefiting a total of direct population of 5,820 people. KIHO will facilitate and supervise the process through local food distribution committees that will be set up in all the six villages. This amount is realized thanks to all cooperating partners and development stakeholders who have chosen to co-support these community projects, among them are the Tanzania Japanese Food Counterpart Funds and the African Development Bank in collaboration with the World Bank, Same District Council, WFP, project beneficiary local communities and KIHO as the local cooperating partner of UN-WFP.

In the past financial year 2012/2013, KIHO facilitated the implementation of constructing three market access roads from October 2012 - March 2013. It included the rehabilitation of two village market roads of 8km in Tae and 15km in Malindi as well as the construction of a new village market access road in Minyala with 10km. The successful implementation of these projects and distribution of the food donated by WFP, made sure that KIHO builds up a lasting partnership with WFP.

Brand new printer donated to our office!

https://www.kilimanjarohope.org/news-updates/brand-new-printer-donated-to-our-office

https://www.kilimanjarohope.org/news-updates/brand-new-printer-donated-to-our-office#comments

office

volunteers

KIHO is very happy to announce that we have a very valued new item in our office. This new laserjet has several advantages. First, will be much quicker to print the pages that we need for our projects and partners. Second, it will be much cheaper for KIHO to print because it is a laserjet and the cartridge can print some 1,700 pages. Third, we have finally a scanner as well as photocopier in our office, because the printer also offers these options as well. In the past, we always had to go to town and pay at least TSH700 ($0.4 or $0.3) for one scan which really added up costs for us. Now, we finally can scan and print for free which we are very grateful for.

Of course, KIHO will continue to think twice before we print any page because we want to be a "green office". And we very much hope that we can be in touch with other individuals or organizations who can help us to enhance our office which so far is still equipped on a very basic level. Thank you for considering your support!
